5/13/13

Dear Friends,

Greetings from St. Anne's Episcopal Church!  We are coming to the end of the Easter season and look forward to Pentecost this Sunday.

WORSHIP

We gather at 10am on Sundays in Lackey Chapel, 105 University Drive, Conway.  This week's worship will be very special.  Not only will we be hosting Charles vonRosenberg, the Episcopal Bishop of South Carolina, but we will have ten of our parishoners confirmed.

For those unfamiliar with the traditions of the Episcopal Church, confirmation consists of anointing, laying of hands, and praying over a candidate, and at the conclusion of the ceremony the confirmed are fully members of the church and reminded of their baptism.

It is fitting that these confirmations take place on Pentecost, the day we recall the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples.  You are encouraged to wear red clothing to help mark the day.

After services, you are invited to celebrate with the Bishop and our new confirmands at a parish picnic.  The picnic will take place at the Riverside Club in Conway (1793 Riverside Dr.).  Please bring a side and beverage.

You may find directions from Lackey Chapel to the Riverside Club here:  http://goo.gl/maps/evpvR

ORGANIZATION

Your Mission Committee is meeting on Tuesday, 5/14.  Please reply to this email if you have a topic you'd like us to discuss.  Thus far our agenda is primarily organizational (setting meeting times, etc.), but the rumors of a six-figure stipend for the Senior Warden ought not be discounted.

VISION

John Henry Newman had this to say about Pentecost in a sermon from 1857:

"This is happening to us.
All of our infirmities and sins are reversed in the coming of the Holy Ghost.
Sin is gone, fear is gone.

All that we have of good comes from this day.  All the sacraments from this day.
If baptism gives, it is from the day of Pentecost. If confirmation, if penance, if Holy Eucharist.....

If faith.  If hope.

It is life for death.  It is the sweet, refreshing breath."

See you Sunday,

Dan Ennis
